Together with Werner Jauk, this amazing Installation was realized for Springfestival 2014 and exposed at Künstlerhaus - Halle für Kunst und Medien Graz.Technical mediatisation has overstepped the measure of the human body in a “racing standstill” (Paul Virilio) of virtuality. Interactions with this environment take place in a state of “all-at-onceness” (Marshall McLuhan)—of a perceptual take on listening.

The concept of [trans-] refer to C.G.Jungs´s theorie of the archetypes shadow and persona. The collective consciousness and unconscious are primaries of human being and is mirrored in his experience. This experience is transported by communication. If it is possible to come to terms of the shadow, you could gain subversive lifeforce. Electronic soundscapes and rhythmical patterns seem to assimilate playful in a synchronous and asynchronous manner and translate it into a visual composition.

Within our project, generative design is connected with textile design. Weaving, the oldest craft in history is combined with modern technology. But before the thread is woven by hand to form a piece of cloth, it is subjected to a dyeing process following the principles of modern audio visualistics. Remembering Marshall McLuhan’s concept from “The extension of men”, technology is used as a prosthetic device to express and preserve what otherwise would be limited to one sensory channel. Generative design, including robotics, is contrasted with handcraft. Hand and machine. Circuit board and draft. In doing so, we were most fascinated by finding the analogy between the concepts of programming a circuit board and designing a textile. By setting up the loom, the textile is programmed and its future features are defined.
We reinterpreted the old Asian dye techniques, Ikat and Shibory and developed a machine capable of visualizing the input, sound in our case, and perpetuating it on the thread. Like every acoustic signal, music can be split up in different frequency spectra. The combination of these characteristics enables us for recognizing something as tone, music or noise. This is precisely what our dyeing machine is doing: It digitalizes, analyzes and encodes the input and transforms it into impulses of color and movement. The input creating the design does not necessarily have to be of auditory character. In our pilot project, the context, namely the use of the textile as baby sling/baby wrap, was the determining factor for the decision, which input is processed – music and ultrasound pictures/Doppler sonography derived from the heartbeat of unborn children. The choice of materials is based on the decision criteria of environmental safety and tolerability as well as the special requirements to be met by the textile. Unfortunately, here is no public video online. But look out! We want to disclose that secret soon.
